Custom Orthotics
What are Orthotics?
Orthotics are special inserts that you put into your shoe to help align your foot and ankle closer to the neutral position when standing and walking. They can be prefabricated (over-the-counter) or custom. Custom Orthotics are made specifically to your feet with individualized measurements for each foot and are fabricated based on the activities that you like to do.
How do I know if I need Orthotics?
If you have pain in your hips and legs, especially into the ankles or the feet, it could be caused by your foot hitting the ground in an improper position. This puts excessive strain on the structures around your ankle, such as your muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joint surfaces, which affects the alignment through the rest of your body. Some of the common injuries are shin splints, posterior tibialis tendinitis, achilles tendinitis, and plantar fasciitis.
Our Process
We start with a thorough evaluation of your foot & ankle alignment and biomechanics to determine if you need an orthotic. This includes measuring the position of your arch, heel, and other parts of your foot to check your natural position. It also includes video gait analysis for visual education of your impairments and suggestions for proper shoe wear for your type of foot. Based on your evaluation, we can give you several suggestions for an over-the-counter orthotic, or if your deficits indicate, we can cast you for a custom made orthotic.
If you choose to proceed with Custom Orthotics, you may have a second appointment for casting, as the biomechanical evaluation can be a lengthy process. During casting, we will discuss the different types of Custom Orthotics that would benefit you.
We use a professional laboratory out of state, so the turn around time for your orthotics can be 2 ½ to 3 weeks, at which time we will schedule a fitting. Custom Orthotics should fit like a glove and we strive to attain that for you. The lab we use gives 90 days of free adjustments to the shell to allow us to achieve the best fit.
Can I go through my insurance?
Most insurances do not cover Custom Orthotics, so we strive to keep our fees low and only recommend Custom Orthotics for those who absolutely need them.
